Road to the Open

With the close of entries on April 25, the road to the 2012 U.S. Open Championship at The Olympic Club in San Francisco June 14-17 has officially begun. This year the USGA accepted 9,006 entries, just the fourth time entries went beyond 9,000 and only 80 shy of the all-time record set in 2009 when the Open was contested at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course in Farmingdale, N.Y.

For 94.6 percent of the applicants (8,527 golfers), the arduous path to tee it up at The Olympic Club commences with 18-hole local qualifying at 109 sites across the country. From Rhode Island to Alaska, and from Florida to Hawaii, professionals and amateurs with a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 1.4, hope to fulfill their ultimate dream of playing with the world’s best players.

The harsh reality is just 6.4 percent of the competition (550 players) will actually survive local qualifying and advance to the 36-hole sectional portion of qualifying. At the sectional level, they will be joined by another group of golfers who were exempt from local qualifying. Golfers exempt from local qualifying include pros from various top global tours and elite amateurs who meet certain performance criteria.

Sectional qualifying takes place at 11 U.S.-based sites and two international locations from May 21-June 4. A sectional in Japan is set for May 21 and the England qualifier will be staged on May 28. The 11 U.S. sectional qualifiers will take place June 4.

Following the completion of sectional qualifying, the USGA will have its final field of 156 – approximately half the field is fully exempt from qualifying – for the 112th U.S. Open, and those golfers will play for one of the world’s most coveted titles.
